Dosing CBD drops for pets
The dosage of CBD drops for pets is determined by the size of the animal. The easiest way to determine the correct dose is to consider the animal’s weight. Below you can find a table for the usage of 5% CBD drops containing 500 mg of CBD.
Try the following 3 dosing methods:
- Drop the CBD pet care drops directly into your pet’s mouth. Your pet might resist due to previous negative memories associated with medicines with unpleasant taste.
- Add the pet care drops to your pet’s food or treats. The drops tend to soak up nicely in certain foods.
- Apply the drops to your hands and massage your pet’s gums. From there, the CBD will pass into the blood.
A lot depends on the cat or dog, so not everyone will be successful with the first method. A study revealed that there is no significant difference in CBD absorption via mucous membranes or directly via a dog’s mouth and stomach.
What is the recommended dosage?
We recommend adding CBD drops into your pet’s food. You can add it into their favourite treat, which they eat in a single serving, or mix it into their usual food. We prefer the first option of a smaller treat as the dog may change its mind if the quantities are bigger. For dogs, we recommend to start with an evening dose after a walk, and after a week, when the dog is accustomed to hemp, consider a daily dose before a walk if the purpose is to improve mobility.
The dose below is the daily dose, so if you administer two doses per day, the amount below should be divided. The evening dose can be larger in this case. It may also make sense to increase the dose by a drop if you divide it in two.
Pet weight | How many 5% CBD drops per day |

10-20 kg | 3-4 |
20-30 kg | 5-6 |

CBD DROPS FOR CATS - FAQ
CBD drops for cats stand out as the top choice for pet owners seeking natural support for promoting healthy mobility, calmness, immune function, and other benefits. Unlike many pharmaceutical drugs, CBD is relatively free of side effects and does not cause long-term damage to the body.
The utilization of hemp for medicinal purposes is not unique to our civilization. In fact, it has been utilized for nearly a millennium to alleviate various ailments. Holistic doctors and veterinarians continue to explore the many ways in which CBD hemp drops can benefit both humans and animals. While the majority of research has concentrated on humans, dogs, and laboratory animals, several organizations are beginning to investigate clinical trials in cats.
Why do cat owners use CBD drops?
Studies have shown CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its ability to promote calmness, reduce seizures and improve general well-being. It can even help improve your cat’s mood, skin, coat and energy levels. Other indications are: pain, gastrointestinal problems, seizures, asthma, chronic upper respiratory infections, lower urinary tract disease, appetite stimulation or reduction of nausea, sedative effects.
How many CBD drops should I give to my cat?
Overdosing on CBD is not possible, as your cat’s body will simply eliminate the excess through waste. Fortunately, there are no reported cases of cats overdosing on CBD drops alone, as any excess CBD is eliminated through their waste (cannabis is a different matter). It is therefore unlikely that you’ll end up giving your cat an excessive amount. Abba Nutrition offers 5% CBD drops in a 10 ml bottle, suitable for cats weighing less than 10 kg. However, when initially introducing CBD drops to your cat, it’s best to start slow. This approach aids in finding the ideal dose for your pet without overwhelming the system or causing side effects.
How long does it take for CBD drops to work on my cat?
Cats vary in their responses to CBD drops, but typically, you can expect the following response times:
- When you put CBD directly into your cat’s mouth (sublingual) – 20-60 minutes
- When you put CBD in cat food – 45 – 90 minutes
Note: When treating chronic problems, optimal results may not be immediately apparent, often becoming noticeable after 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use.
Do the CBD drops have any side effects?
This is an excellent question and something you should always consider with any medicine or supplement you give your cat. The most common side effect I have seen in my patients is increased appetite and reduced anxiety. CBD products may lead to increased calmness in some animals. It has the potential to promote relaxation, and sensitivity to its effects can vary among animals. If you notice excessive calmness in your cat, discontinue the therapy and consult your veterinarian (a step that should of course be taken beforehand). There is a possibility of allergic reactions. Some cats with a grass allergy may also be allergic to hemp. This is rare, but possible.
A dietary supplement should not be considered a replacement for a diverse and balanced diet.
CBD DROPS FOR DOGS - FAQ
Numerous success stories highlight dogs overcoming anxiety, experiencing reduced seizures, and even overcoming cancer thanks to cannabidiol (CBD), one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. But how can one substance help with so many unrelated problems? What is its mechanism of action? Cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, are substances that mimic the endocannabinoid chemicals that occur naturally in all vertebrates. Receptors for endocannabinoids are found throughout the body. Endocannabinoids serve as master regulators in the body, directing other systems to either speed up or slow down, thereby stabilizing the body and restoring homeostasis. Cannabinoids from the cannabis plant impact the same receptors but each in a slightly distinct manner. THC, for example, is intoxicating, but CBD is not.
Is it harmful?
In contrast to THC, which can lead to toxicity and even death in dogs when given at human-prescribed doses, CBD only resulted in diarrhea and alterations in certain liver enzymes after a few weeks. The main concern with CBD is its inhibition of a body chemical called cytochrome P450, responsible for metabolizing the majority of medications. If a medication’s efficacy relies on its metabolized product, CBD has the potential to reduce the effectiveness of the medication. If the safety of the drug relies on its timely elimination from the body, CBD has the potential to cause the accumulation of toxic levels. If your dog is on other medications, never administer CBD without consulting your vet first.
Does it work?
While studies on dogs are relatively scarce, there is a substantial body of research, encompassing around 23,000 published papers, examining the impact of CBD in laboratory animals and humans. These studies show promising results in areas such as pain, particularly arthritic pain, itching, anxiety, and cancer, with at least one study focusing on dogs for each indication.
Overall, the evidence that CBD can be beneficial with at least some medical conditions is compelling. The endocannabinoid system is the largest system in the body and the least studied. Every year brings new discoveries – and new claims. This marks the beginning of a brave new world in health but as with any new journey, anticipate occasional wrong turns, dead ends, and false hopes. CBD is not a miracle medication, but it may be the miracle your dog needs.
Is the use of CBD drops sensible?
CBD drops for dogs are thought to cause a number of positive effects with minimal side effects. CBD is believed to have anti-inflammatory, relaxing and analgesic properties. The decision to try CBD drops rests with each individual pet owner but no guarantees can be made regarding effectiveness.
When can we expect an effect?
Reports from users indicate that the effect of CBD may become apparent after 1 to 2 weeks of regular intake.
How does CBD work in dogs?
Testimonials from dog owners suggest that CBD can help with anxiety, stress and pain, among other things. However, no promises about efficacy should be made, so pet owners should find out for themselves whether CBD drops help their dogs.
What is the difference between CBD drops for dogs and CBD drops for humans?
In dogs, even low levels of CBD can yield positive effects. People often prefer CBD drops with higher percentages. To avoid dosage problems, you should use special CBD drops for dogs or animals.
Is it possible for dogs and cats to experience any drug-like effects from CBD drops?
Pet owners can rest assured, as CBD drops for dogs and cats do not have any intoxicating effects. The product may contain THC up to a maximum of 0,2 %. This small amount is not enough to put our furry friends into a psychoactive state.
A dietary supplement should not be considered a replacement for a diverse and balanced diet.
